Bridging the Gap: How My Experience Shapes My Mission to Support the AEC Industry

The architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry is the backbone of our built environment, but it’s also a space fraught with challenges. As firms juggle compressed timelines, fierce competition for talent, and rising costs, many are struggling to stay ahead while maintaining the quality and integrity of their work. With almost fifteen years of experience on the design and construction side, this is where I step in—with a unique combination of technical expertise, business acumen, and a deep passion for helping firms win the right work, build a sustainable organization, and achieve their version of success.

My career began in structural engineering with a specialty in historic preservation, a path driven by an inclination for complex problem-solving, a love of heritage structures, and a knack for balancing creativity with technical precision. My favorite projects were the ones involving rehabilitating or adapting a building to serve its community once again – everything from emergency stabilization of rural Connecticut Congregational Churches to restoration of abandoned lighthouses, to rehabilitation of National Landmarks, to adaptation of neglected mill complexes as commercial centers or multi-family housing.

As a Principal with a small consulting engineering firm, I quickly learned that in order to win and successfully execute this niche area of practice, I would need to track leads, write winning proposals, share my team’s successes, and develop internal training and drafting standards to maintain quality and mitigate risk associated with such atypical work. I also needed to develop expertise in materials research, bid processes, and specification-writing as my firm served as Prime Design Professional on many of these projects, a responsibility many traditional structural engineers do not take on.

Over time, I began to see a recurring theme: the same skills I used to solve engineering challenges— balancing divergent and convergent thinking, technical communication, research, and process optimization—could be applied to the business side of the AEC industry.

Communications shows up everywhere in our Industry – whether it’s coordinating drawings and specifications to accurately represent design intent; writing technical reports outlining the history, condition, and maintenance requirements of an existing building; crafting winning proposals; or developing tools and resources to train employees, educate external stakeholders, and streamline internal processes. I found immense satisfaction in solving operational and communications problems that were just as critical as the designs themselves, and soon looked to expand my experience and skillset by working with other AEC organizations dealing with their own unique Communications challenges.

As Senior Project Manager with Golden Egg Concepts, I bring domain expertise, a broad skillset, and a deep-seated respect for small- and medium-sized firms facing industry-wide challenges.

Reduced Schedules for Delivery: In an era where timelines are being slashed, firms often prioritize production over differentiation. I help clients craft tailored proposals that address client needs and highlight technical expertise, ensuring they can compete for the work they’re most passionate about without compromising on technical excellence or quality.

Talent Acquisition and Retention: The skills gap in AEC is real, and smaller firms feel the strain the most. I work with clients to develop effective internal communications and training materials, equipping their teams with the tools they need to attract, retain, and grow their talent.

Increased Cost of Professional Liability Insurance: Quality management is at the heart of mitigating risk and reducing liabilities. With experience in both design and construction, I provide firms with the resources needed to strengthen internal processes and protect their bottom line.

Navigating a Crowded Marketplace: Standing out in a competitive landscape requires more than great technical work—it requires strategic storytelling. I help firms identify and communicate their unique value, from showcasing project successes and technical innovations to building client relationships that last.

Small- and medium-sized AEC firms play a critical role in shaping our communities, but their success depends on their ability to adapt to an ever-changing industry. I’ve walked in their shoes, facing the same pressures they navigate every day, and I know how important it is to have a partner who truly understands their needs.

Whether it’s helping a firm select and win the right projects, develop effective resources to support their production and internal operations, or celebrate their achievements, my mission is to help AEC firms do what they do best—innovate, create, and build the future.
