Does Your Website Make the Grade?

March 13th, 2018 by Hilary Adorno

What do I know about web design? I know what I like and hate about the (probably) millions of them I've visited. There is nothing more frustrating than not finding the information I'm looking for or trying to navigate a non-mobile optimized website on my cell phone. Maybe the worst offense is finding  outdated information, dead links and pictures from 1995... almost ensuring my business will go elsewhere.

Let’s start with a few questions about your current website:

  • Can your potential clients find your site easily?
  • Can visitors quickly determine your product and offerings?
  • Does it differentiate you from your competitors?
  • Does the content speak to your existing and potential clients?
  • Is your site optimized for all electronic devices?
  • Is it easy to navigate?
  • Can you easily update it, without the intervention of the original site developer?

If you answered 'no' to any of these questions, keep reading, as I'm about to break down some confounding website development lingo in layman’s terms.

User Interface Design (UI) focuses on anticipating what users might do on your website and ensures that its elements are easy to access and understand.

User Experience Design (UX) focuses on having a deep understanding of human nature as it relates to website use. It considers what users need from your website, while keeping abilities and limitations in mind.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) improves website positioning (ranking) on search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.). The goal is to get your site listed among the top results when people type in search terms that are relevant to your service offerings and areas of focus. In other words, now that you have a beautiful, functional website – you need people to find it.

Mobile Optimization ensures visitors accessing your website from devices other than a desktop have an engaging and user-friendly experience that's been optimized for all devices (mobile phones, tablets, laptops, etc.). Content and images respond to present optimally, showing your website in an ideal state, regardless of the device it is being viewed on.
